Feeling Gloomy?

Clubs are meant to be happy places. Revellers on a night out, not so quietly enjoying a drink or ten, dancing incoherently to music they’re only pretending to know. Right? Well, according to Leonard and Cliff, it’s not always the case. They started the London-based night Feeling Gloomy, which takes place at the city’s Bar Academy in Islington every Saturday – it’s not a joyous place.

The idea behind the night is simple – it’s “all about songs that tug at your heartstrings, reduce grown men to blubbering wrecks and make ladies reach for a stiff one” – a drink that is. It’s not that kind of club. Yet, according to the website, it’s not depressing. Does that mean they’ve wiped The Smiths from the playlist?

Not quite. Although they do admit to banning Leonard Cohen as “even we aren’t built of that sturdy a stuff”. Other bands recognisably morbid include The Cure, Nirvana, The Verve, but oddly enough, Abba, Pulp and McFly make the list…

Feeling Gloomy takes place at Bar Academy, Islington (nearest tube Angel). £5 before 12pm/NUS, £7 after.
